The term Lithiés (pronounced lee-thee-és) is a convention of the Nobel laureate poet, Odysseas Elytis. It reflects upon the way in which, since antiquity, celestial bodies and atmospheric phenomena have attained a mythical dimension amidst the brilliant pattern of color and light which adorns the splendor of Santorini. The mystery of dawn and sunset, the wind and clouds have helped to form the genius loci, the pervading spirit of a place. The Lithiés homes capture the spirit of the island, echoing the poetic verse “dry stone walls (the Greek word "lithiés") and sea waves hand in hand” from Elytis’ The Axion Esti. |
